Empowering Banking Clients with Rule Configuration Tool

A tool helps set up and manage the rules, criteria, and processes for loan approvals, ensuring that loans are granted based on predefined conditions and risk assessments.

Roles and Deliverables

User Research
Design of the Rule Configuration Flows

Project Duration

April 2023 - August 2023

Overview of Configuration Options

The Rule Configuration is a key part of our Product Configuration Project, which is our main focus for 2023 and 2024. Our goal is to shift from manual to automatic configuration, a crucial step in becoming a SaaS company. This change will speed up the launch of banking programs for banks and credit unions.

Interviews

  • Responsible for configuring the rules.

  • To clarify these rules and the associated attributes to Credit Union / Bank Program managers and document their decisions.

  • To ensure the rule configurations are correctly implemented within the product.

Configuring rule settings is complex.

Project Goals

We require a tool that accelerates user proficiency in rule configuration while seamlessly integrating with our decision engine, optimizing communication and development efficiency.

  • Present rules in a clear, concise, and structured format so that clients can understand rules faster.

  • Make data attributes within each rule easily identifiable.

  • Enable clients to confidently build and tailor their rules for their program needs.

Design Research

  • Brainstorm and ideate on different approaches to building rules without code

  • Explore existing no-code or low-code platforms for inspiration

Ideation Process

  • Observe existing rules and write down how each rule is structured.

  • Explore options and conduct weekly prototype evaluations with the development team

  • Resource Assessment, Effort Estimation, Prioritization

Feasibility Check

Host feasibility workshops and Invite PMs, developers, solution teams other designers to join
Early Issue Identification, Alignment, and Buy-In

Design Highlights

Present rules in a clear, concise, and structured format so that clients can understand rules faster.

Making data attributes easily identifiable

Clarify Unreadable Names

Descriptions and sample data can enhance transparency and help users better understand third-party attributes.

Data Source Variability

Enable efficient data source filtering for attributes that exist in multiple sources.

Manage Volume

Implement a search bar to navigate a substantial number of data attributes effectively.

Providing Greater Rule-building Flexibility

Attribute to Attribute Group

Users can convert individual attributes into attribute groups, facilitating the creation of more complex rules. This transformation expands the rule builder's capabilities to accommodate intricate logic.

Calculation Capabilities

Within attributes/attribute groups, users can perform calculations that involve both attributes and values. This empowers users to create rules that consider a wider range of factors, enhancing the rule-building process.

Impact and Takeaways

This project secured a vital contract with a credit union, which has 2,400 financial institutions and processes nearly 7.7 billion transactions annually. It boosted client confidence, facilitated our transformation into a SaaS company, and greatly reduced manual configuration efforts, enhancing our operational efficiency. Collaborating closely with the development team, I gained valuable insights into the intricate logic structures that can be integrated into my design work. This experience has enriched my skill set and deepened my understanding of how to create effective and efficient solutions.
